“Ukrainian Speech Synthesizer for Blind Apple Users” — Digital Dignity and Accessibility

In April 2021, the Ukrainian government adopted a National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment in Ukraine until 2030, which includes the development of digital accessibility.

The NGO Kharkiv Rehabilitation Centre for Young People with Disabilities and Their Families “Pravo Vyboru” launched a new inclusive project “Ukrainian Speech Synthesizer for Blind Apple Users — Digital Dignity and Accessibility”, supported by the Act to Drive Change Acceleration Program of the “Phoenix: Power of Communities” project, implemented by the East Europe Foundation with EU funding.

This is an important milestone that the project team — Andriy Butenko, Dmytro Popov, Mykola Lahotskyi, Serhiy Asieiev — have been working on for six months with inspiration, attention to detail and belief in its necessity.

Our application is for people with visual impairments who use phones and computers through screen readers and speech synthesizers for communication, learning and work: schoolchildren, students, older people, blind professionals — lawyers, psychologists, teachers, programmers and others.

The problem we are solving

In the Apple ecosystem (iOS/macOS) there is no quality Ukrainian system voice for VoiceOver. Available options do not provide blind users with comfortable long-term use, correct reading of mixed texts (Ukrainian/English, numbers, links), or stability at the system integration level.

Consequences: reduced productivity during study and work; forced use of another language; barriers to accessing digital services.

We invite collaboration!

The application is developed with the support of the Act to Drive Change Acceleration Program of the “Phoenix: Power of Communities” project, implemented by the East Europe Foundation with EU funding. East Europe Foundation | EU in Ukraine
